About the Ole Virginia Hams
We are a non-profit club organized for the educational and scientific study
of electronics and communication, and to provide amateur radio communication
services for the public. The OVH is associated with the
American Radio Relay League
(ARRL) and the Foundation for Amateur Radio (F.A.R.).
The club was formed in April 1961 by a group of 21 local amateur radio
operators. Over the years we have grown to about 150 members which allowed us
to expand the club activities. The club was incorporated in April 1983 as a
non-profit organization.
Our purpose is "to create interest in amateur radio, to promote study and
experimentation in amateur communications, to further the art and to provide a
common bond for all those interested in amateur radio."
Activities that OVH members are involved with include:
- provide training for all license classes
- provide voluntary examination sessions for all license classes
- provide scholarships for high school students within Prince William
County
- provide message traffic - personal, health, and welfare emergencies - via
the National Traffic System (NTS)
- provide severe weather reports, weather watching, road closings, etc. for
the National Weather Service under the SKYWARN network
- provide publice service communications for local government and charitable
group events (i.e., bike-a-thons, walk-a-thons, parades, etc.)
- participate in FEMA and Red Cross emergency preparedness drills and
similar programs held within Prince William County and surrounding areas
- participate in the amateur radio Field Day - an exercise in emergency
